Questions can often ask you to: describe, explain, compare. But what does 'identify' mean?
Does it mean I have to describe it or just list something?

it means to name it.
think of like if a police officer shows someone a picture and says "can you identify this man" the officer knows what he looks like, he need to know his name.
so all you need to do is list things, but depending on the teacher/professor, it wouldnt be a bad idea to put a few details. just to be on the safe side.

Describe it, tell what it is. Water is, wet and clear, sometimes warm to the touch or cold depending on the ambient temperature. In a clean state it is clear, but can take on the color of any contaminates that may be present.
You can be brief or go on for hours. But, describe it. You can use all of your senses to explain. Fells cool to the touch, smells like? Looks like? Tastes like? Etc. Or use only the appropriate ones.

As in all homework questions, it all depends what you are identifiying. If you are asked to identify three reasons for the decline of educational acumen of our students, you must think of three things and list them in detailed description.
