Dogs do NOT eat their own kind, so why do people say its a dog eat dog world?

Maybe it's a reference to dog fighting where they fight to the death. Implies vicious competition where there can only be one winner.

No doubt dogs did eat dog at some stage of evolution, and no doubt still would if the circumstances demanded it.
