The song Mellow Yellow refers to a type of LSD manufactured by Owsley, an underground chemist, the first to produce large quantities of pure LSD from 1966 thru 1967. "Mellow Yellow" is heard in other songs such as Hendrix song "Axis Bold as Love" & in Zappa's song "Absolutely free', both tunes came out in 1967.

Used to be a form of LSD in the early-mid 1970's. A sort of brand name. Other acid floating around in that time period were, of course, Blotter (which appeared in countless different brands, each with its own little imprint on each dose. I remember "The Force" which had little Star Wars fighter jets on it; Dark Side of the Moon, which had Pink Floyd logos on it; a tweaky little comic Magic Mushroom, and various cartoon characters such as Goofy, Mickey Mouse, and Mighty Mouse, as well as the traditional circular dot ("blotter"), , but there were also WindowPane, Clear Light, Purple Barrel, and Orange Barrel, as well as the aforementioned Yellow Mellow, to name but a few.

A song in the 60s goes as ..." they called it mellow yellow.." by Donovan (not sure I spelled his name right. I just thought of another one-prepare yuorself-it's gross:
sign on the door of the bathroom at a retreat:
"if it's yellow let it mellow
if it's brown flush it down"
told you it was gross. sorry.
