Question:
How should we refer to the new decade?
Yahoo UK

We had the Eighties, then the Nineties, then an attempt to get us to refer to this decade as 'the Noughties'… But what on earth should we call the decade from 2010-2019?

No internationally recognized name has been given to the decades of this new century, let alone the rest of the millennium. When we say the 20s or the 60s or the 80s, we are actually lazily referring to the 1920s, the 1960s and the 1980s.

The reason why we have been using the shortened version of the decade names is simple: we have become lazy impatient speakers and writers. So what has made (and is making) us lazier and lazier? Our lifestyles in the age of fast pace and lack of time.

Have you ever paused to think about how our languages and the way we communicate are becoming shorter and less sophisticated? We are increasingly using acronyms, abbreviations and truncations.

The truncated version of decade names is just one of the many degradations in the quality of the language we use to communicate. Instead of saying the 1920s we say the 20s. If we had never done this, we wouldn't be asking us now what we should call the decades in the 21st century.

Fact is no matter what the century or the millennium the 20s is 20s and the 50s is the 50s. So, 1950s, 2050s and 3050s are all 50s in the eye of the person who lives in those times.

The first decade of a century linguistically cannot be assigned a name because 10s or the 1910s is meaningless. That is because the numbers between 10 and 19 (inclusive) have different names of their own (especially 10, 11 and 12), unlike the numbers between 20 and 99 that follow the TEN'S+ONE'S formula for their structure.

It's funny... We started as neanderthals speaking in extremely undeveloped and unsophisticated tongues and we advanced our languages to become the ones we have today. And now, our ever increasing dependence on technology and the increase in the pace of life it has caused is degrading the quality of the languages the people before us worked so hard to develop. Will we become neanderthals again or just incredibly advance creatures with no dependence on spoken language?

How about the "Crystal teens"? It would make sense if you read my reasoning below.

HD TVs: a source of entertainment, very clear views, almost as if you're right there with the show. Did I mention it will be outdated in about five years? In about 20 years, they are expected to be replaced completely by Ultra-HD. In the mean time, they are expected to undergo constant upgrades to the design and use.

Plasma tvs: when they first came, the plasma tvs were not HD but rather "ED" which means enhanced definition. Soon the plasma tv was HD and used noble gases to make a clearer image.

Hubble space telescope anyone? If you were to print out a single photo that the hubble space telescope takes, you'd need a piece of paper the size of a football field. Surprise Surprise! It's just that clear.

iPod anyone? Apple brought about a revolution with these music players that not only have a great battery life, a digital music store to go with it and WiFi but raised the bar on all audio player companies including Sony, Sansa, etc. The application store created a lot of revenue and other companies are attempting to follow suit. Getting to the point, iPod brought about the iPhone in '07. The iPhone and iPod touch can both play HD movies/shows while revolutionising the smart phone industry, once again raising the bar.

If you want a few more reasons, search for something that you know is very popular (electronics mostly), go back a few years if you can and see what the older models looked like. You'll often find that the inventions leading up the desired effect are no longer attractive. But things are becoming clearer, quite so that products are sleeker in design, more effective in everyday life and it's living up to the hype. There is no end in sight to this revolution, and there won't be for many years.

Things are becoming clear as crystal.

I'm going to go with the Teenies, (I know it sounds horrific, just light the Noughties)

My reason, Teen is the most common sound when of all the years in this decade, like Twenties, Thirties, Forties and so on. As for the Noughties, well I agree that it doesn't work but hey 9 out of 10 has got to be right. Oh and Tenties would just be awful.

First the Noughties was originally a slang word the 200X years that quickly caught on (They were previously to be called the Two-Thouasands) and was officially the name of the decade. Therefore the proper name for the 201X decade is currently the Tens though, like Noughties, in the end, Teenies, Teenties, etc. will probably be the official name for the decade.

I don't even know how to call this decade, and its almost over. Maybe the tens. It makes me kind of sad that this decade is almost over, this is the first ever decade I can actually remember from begining to end. In fact just as a side note I even made a quiz on quizzer.com about the 2000s. Its called the 2000s test. If you are ever feeling nostalgic you can check it out. Also in about 11 years, we are going to see the twenties again. It's going to get confusing with the 1920's and 2020's. I guess the 1920s will just be known as the roaring twenties. So I guess the 2010s will just be known as the tens or teens or teenies. I hope this upcoming decade is alot better than this one.

Isn't it all irrelevant until the decades over? We only really refer to a whole decade by a singular name after the event (or at least right near the end of it!). The noughties has only really been referred to as such in the last year or so. That said I think when 2019 rolls round Teenies sounds like it could be used by most.

The most logical answer to this question would be the "2010's" (Twenty Ten's).

We have already had: 1900's [Nineteen Hundreds], 1910's [Nineteen Ten's] --- 1980's [Nineteen Eighties], 1990's [Nineteen Nineties], 2000's [Twenty Hundred's] [aka "The Noughties". Personally, I don't like pronouncing this decade like this as it sounds a little dumb but that's my opinion.]

So, I believe it is fair, and logically true, to say that the new decade should be pronounced "The Twenty Ten's" [2010's]. I don't believe we should pronounce it as "The Tens" [10's] because this may be confused with the 1910's, 1810's, etc. Also, It would be silly to rename the decade four years in.

Well, the pattern is:

Nought, Ten, Twenty, Thirty, Forty, Fifty, Sixty, Seventy, Eighty, Ninety.

The decade titles are:

Twenties, Thirties, Forties, Fifties, Sixties, Seventies, Eighties, Nineties, Noughties.... so the next one must be,,,,, Tenies, with this being the correct spelling as in all other cases there is either no change to the base word or the 'y is dropped. Of course if there are any etymologists out there...

Don't know exactly what word to use but this is a decade where the small working class get ripped of by the rich, and to top it all by the people we pay (the people in parlement) and get away with it, if we were doing what they have been doing we would be comited to jail, its as simple as that. They can smoke at work (in parlement) yet we cant, they get there breakfast, dinner and ANY other refreshments paid for providing they have reciepts, if i send some reciepts in do you think that they would re-inburse me, i dont think so.

We the public bail out the banks at a cost of sevral BILLION pound and then they give them selfs a cool half a million to 1 million in bonusus, what is happening to this country.

Young teenagers are running riot on the streets, kicking the hell out of any one who crosses there path and it seems the older the victim the better when they actually go to court, with no custodial sentance but a slap on the wrist and comunity service,

This is a decade where the worker cant aford anything, i went to a fitness gym, council run, it was going to cost me and my wife £80 per month but if i was on benefits it was free, My question is -: if there at the gym for free how can they find a job.

Life must go on as it has always been. My great great great great grand dad had the 10's between 1610-1619 and the twenties 1620-1629. His grand son had his eighties between 1880-1889 and mine were 1980-1989 which, unfortunately, my 2 year-old son can only read about and so his will be 2080-2089. I am therefore happy to go back to the 10s and twenties 2010-2019 having missed out on 1910-1919 and 1920-1929.

Hey all.

Did anyone think to find out what 1910-1919 was called and all the other second decades of any other centuries down through the ages. I'm almost positive that they were called the Tens, as in the Nineteen Tens (1910's)

There is no need to make up a new name if there's nothing wrong with the old ones! Think before you makes up something that future generations are going to laugh at us about.

Teen means adolescents. 2011 and 2012 is much as part of the 2010s as the other years are, whereas adolescences starts around 13 and not at 10.

Just as long as we all refer to the period of ten years commencing 1 Jan 2010 as a "decade" with a lower case initial "d" (as in the question), then 'the tennies', or 'the teenies' will be fine.

What we mustn't do is confuse it with the next true mathematical Decade (upper case initial "D"), which will not begin until 2011.

Since most of the idiots out there managed to get it wrong with the Millennium (which actually started on 1 Jan 2001) and instead celebrated a millennium (of no great significance) which they took to commence on 1 Jan 2000, I expect they'll all get it mixed up again anyway!

Now, let's get it straight - we count the years in groups of ten as follows:

1-10, 11-20, 21-30, 31-40 --- get the idea? The grouping ends with the 0, and the next grouping starts with the 1. The same theory applies to groups of 100, or 1000.

The Tens, Or The Teenies Maybe The Teens?

Thats A Good Question!
2009-12-15 04:01:36 UTC
How about we just stop naming decades altogether? It was always a lazy, wildly inaccurate twentieth century way of plotting social change - in this millenium with it's "n***ties" (sorry, but that word makes me "noughtious"), it's become nothing more than an excuse for lazy journalists to trot out endless "Best of Decade" lists and fill newspapers, magazines and websites with endless reams of worthless tot.

Decades are not coherent, easily-parcelled chunks of time: ask anyone alive between 1960 and 1969 - the UK was still stuck firmly in post-war austerity until 1965. But "The Sixties, maaaan..." is still seen as the decade of swinging London, Mary Quant, the UFO Club and the whole Timothy Leary/Terence McKenna "Turn On, Tune In, Drop Out" ethos.

It would have been nice if the turning of the millenium meant we could have left it all behind - but then I guess, what would the terminally uninspired use as shorthand for their lazy preconceptions?

hmm well what did they call the 1910-1919's? ...and it poses the same question that when we get to the 2020's are we just going to call them the twenties? Or will that get confused with 1920's? So maybe then we should call them the twenty twenties (2020-2029), the twenty thirties (2030+), the twenty forties (2040+) and so on. Which would lead me to suggest that 2010-2019 should just be called the twenty tens??? I really don't like 'the noughties' and will never call them that!
Dannie C
2009-12-14 11:26:54 UTC
Well this period of any decade was always referred to as "The Tens" (ie the 1910's, 1810's etc) so why not just the 2010's (twenty tens)?

Fair enough, "The Noughties" was a tough call, because the period between 00 and 09 was always called the hundreds before (ie nineteen hundreds, eighteen hundreds) we couldn't really have had the twenty hundreds!

But 2010's (twenty tens) works for me.

We should call it the two thousand and tens, or the tens for short. Or later they might call it the twenty-tens.

We should call the present decade the 2000's. 'The zero's' is no good. What did we call the first decade of the 20th century? The 1900's I suppose. I hate "the noughties" that The Telegraph has chosen to use. So childish, embarrassing.

The question is a bit premature. We have another year to decide. If you think about it, a new decade, or the next decade starts on 1 Jan 2011. When you trace the calander back, we went from 1BC to 1AD. There was no year 0, so ten years ends on a 10, 20 30 etc etc and begins on 1, 11, 21, etc etc. Therefore, shall we visit this question next year? Oh and when the time comes, how about simply "tens." Have a good day everyone. - KM, UK

How about the Tweenties?

Given the fact that the 1910s were characterised by World War I, a cancelled Olympic Games, the Russian Revolution, and ended with a flu pandemic that killed between 50-100 million people; and the 1810s comprised revolutionary wars, gangs of machine breakers (Luddites) wrecking factories, and the year without a summer (1816); if the 2010s are better than that, then whatever name we give them ain't so important!

30 yrs ago when I was 30 yrs younger the 1920's was referred to as the 20's, the 1930's was referred to as the 30's. I don't recall what the 1910's was referred to but I presume it'd be the 10's. Common sense would dictate which 10's you'd be referring to cos i-pods weren't around in the 1910's. Therefore the forthcoming decade WILL BE KNOWN AS " THE 10'S".
?
2009-12-14 13:27:24 UTC
It depends on how rough a decade it is. While our spirits are up it could be known as the teens but if it is as dark and dreadful as the 1910 to 1919 years then it should be known as the Twenty Tens or the Second Decade. On that line it could become the Secdecs.

Lets hope its the Teens, but then we can expect years of rapid change, brooding, moody celbs and politicians that get better after 2016. Another possability would be the Tenners

I don't have an alternative but I'm not sure about calling it the teenies, or teens. That wouldn't be applicable until 2013. Unless you're just after a name that refers to only 70% of the decade. Surely we want something that includes 2010, 11,and 12?

Just a thought - we're not at the end of the decade yet as it doesn't end until the end of 2010! There wasn't a year '0' so the first decade started with year '1' and ended with '10', therefore subsequent decades start with the '1' year 1981 to 1990, 1991 to 2000. etc.

I suppose based upon the other decades (NINEties, EIGHTies, SEVENties, SIXties, FIFTies, FOURties, THIRTies, TWENTies and NOUGHTies) the names are loosely based on the precursor being the number used defining the the unit of tens with the "post-cursor" always being "IES". So the closest correct answer would be TENties or TEENties but I think TEENIES sounds better and will probably catch on quicker.

In the early 1900's, this phrase was used even to describe the years from 1910 to 1919; so, with that in mind; we should refer to the new decade as: The twenty hundreds.

I admit, it sounds a little daft - but not as a daft as, "The Teenies", and if we used it, it'd become standard pretty fast. Also no one would really think anything of it; they'd just use it like we used other decades, Twenties, Thirties, Forties etc.
?

Its obviously the TENS! "Teenies" doesn't work cause the teen years wont start until 2013 so that doesn't cover the entire decade (unless you want to call now until 2013 the Tweenies! No thank you!). It might not sound as good as some of the other ideas out there but it is entirely consistent with all the other decades (Twenties start with 20, Thirties start with 30 and so on).
JD
2009-12-14 10:21:20 UTC
The tennies - here's a simple and easy name for it.

The tenties does sound tempting, but it also resembles the twenties and thus lacks identity.

Or maybe the teen years - as humanity itself seems to have returned to an age of adolescence (could that be a sign of its going to pieces?) but anyway, naming the period is not that vital (except perhaps for the consumerist areas), and what I find important is where this world is going - and definitely whether it still has a good destination. Climate change, for one, may give us a clue. Or rather it should give politicians a warning to stop messing around with this world.

"The Ones"

Because the most recent one started with "The Noughties" right? Therefore "The Ones" would be a good successor as it sounds "significant" and "special". For Instance, in the film The Matrix, Morpheus refers Neo to others as "the one", because hes important. London 2012 olympics, 2010 World cup in South Africa and the 2012 prophecy in mayan calenders are all important events. Sounds like a real significant decade to me, hence the decade: The Ones.

This decade has surely been the 'double noughties'. We now move into the noughties proper, given that people refer to the years ahead as 'twenty ten' or 'twenty twelve' but refer to the years passed by their proper name, such as 'two thousand and eight' etc. We could have the 'noughty teens' followed by the 'noughty twenties' etc. Now wouldn't that be fun!

We celebrated the new century a year too early (at the end of the 99th year), along with the Millennium (at the end of the 1,999th year), so why be any different for the new decade?!

The Teenies. Having looked at other answers, the logical names for the decades starting 1990,2000,2010 and 2020 would be the nineties, the hundreds, the tens and the twenties but I'll stick to the 'teenies' because it sounds nice.

Generally speaking the decade between '10 and '19 of any century is called "the teens."
Jon B
2009-12-15 02:36:37 UTC
Not that I remember them, but in the antiques world the 1910-20 period is referred to as the 1910's, simple really so these will be the 20 tens presumably unless of course we adopt some obscure reference which becomes trendy as we so often do...whatever we call them lets hope they don't mirror the 1910's with world wars etc. History has a habit of repeating itself (sadly)
2009-12-15 02:36:07 UTC
the 20th century did not pick up decade labels till the 1920's , so why not do the same for the 21st century.

Then perhaps we can label them the 21's ( Twenty ones ) /31's/41's etc, and then in the following decade add a 2 , so it becomes the 22's/32's/42's etc ,the second digit showing the passage of another century.

Should keep us going for a while :)

It's the twenty-hundreds; like the nineteen hundreds before it. You know, the nineteen hundreds; they ended nearly 90 years ago at the beginning of the 1920s, when it became known as the twenties.

The "teenies" sounds like something that would be said by people who say "bling" a lot, as if jewellery was hard to say. Bling, just to educate you if you're one of those people, (or mindless sheep as you're known), is an onomatopoeia word; a word that sounds like the sound the word it describes. For example: crash, bang, wallop, crack, crunch etc. Bling is like almost like "ding" an onomatopoeia word ; I imagine whomever started this bling rubbish was trying to make the chiming sound associated with sparkling jewellery-except jewellery doesn't make a sound. That was for the morons who say bling because every other moron like them says it and thinks it's clever to say "I got me some wicked bling, blud". If this is how you speak, feel ashamed, you're spreading illiteracy and poor diction to young children who will imitate you. Just in case; illiteracy means "dem peepul wot can't read 'n' write, yeah". And diction is the correct way of pronouncing words. Morons.

To every one else with a brain, have a Merry Christmas! Ho ho Ho! :)

Does everything have to have a ridiculous name that sounds like it was invented by a marketing company or a five-year-old? It's a decade, not a packet of sweets. It IS called the Twenty-tens, just like the current decade is the Twenty-hundreds by everyone who is not an idiot.

i really hoped this was a joke 2000-2009 is a decade, but is not the decade. this is why education is getting worse in places like the US and UK. 2001-2010 is the decade, so that question should be asked a year from now. if you told someone to count to ten and they started with zero and ended with nine, we would find them somewhat strange. come now.

OH DEAR OH DEAR How did they manage from 1910-1920 ! The poor peoplle never had a name for their decade,

I must conjecture thet were too busy getting on with life.

While doing this minds inmeasurable superior to our own where plotting the fist world war where teenagers aged 16 upward faced the daily ritual of daily slaughter and being vapourised in the trenches.

We refer to the 'eighteen/nineteen-tens', etc.... not 'the (nineteen) tennies' so why should it not be referred to as the 'twenty-tens'? Surely this is the most logical, intelligent solution? The more emotive derivations can be used as and when by newspapers for sensationalism, or individuals for personalisation. :-)

probably the most logical answer to this is to refer to it as 2010s, that is twenty-tens as I suppose we have been referring to 1910s, 1920s, that is, ninteen-tens, ninteen-twenties..

I dare say the emphasis on 20 is more important as to signify that we are referring to twenty-tens rather than ninteen-tens.

Strictly speaking the "teens" or whatever you want to call it won't start until 1st Jan 2011, just as the last millenium ended on 31st December 2000, not 1999.

When you count you start with 1 and not 0. Ask any 5 year old to count, they'll start with 1.

Better ask this question in a year's time.
