Whoa, I just realized that if you look up close, asterisks look like little stick men. Intentional or no?

Yes, they are actually really small versions of those censoring knights from south park.
They stand there vigilantly guarding the children, against your profanity! ALL HAIL THE KNIGHTS OF STANDARDS AND PRACTICES!

Asterisk is defined as a "star-shaped figure (*) used chiefly to indicate an omission, a reference to a footnote, or an unattested word, sound, or affix". Since it is hard to make a 5-point star on a typewriter keyboard, this idea was thought up.
An asterisk is so called because it resembles a conventional image of a star (Latin astrum). The original shape was six-armed, each arm like a teardrop shooting from the center. For this reason, in some computer circles it is called a SPLAT, perhaps due to the "squashed-bug" appearance of the asterisk on many early line printers.
In Japan , it looks like an X with dots around it, similar to the Chinese character for rice.
