Usually, I'm good at crude, but for you Bonnie (because I like your name), I'll clean up.

As useless as

...an Alaskan beer cooler.

...a screen door in a submarine.

...dehydrated water

...a used car guarantee

...wet gunpowder

...a camel with no hump.

...a couch potato with a remote control

I'm a SNAG (Sensitive New Age Guy), and an English teacher, so I want to edit your sentence to be more fluid and more gender inclusive.

"There is no doubt that graduates have acquired a wealth of theoretical knowledge, but without the ability to apply that wealth they are as useless as..."

Let's face it, female graduates who cannot apply knowledge are just as useless as males who cannot do so either.

She does need a SIMILE, not a synonym.

"He is useless, like..." indicates a simile.

Most of the ones that popped into my head were the same crude ones you probably thought of. LOL

My offers are:

He is useless, like a wooden nickel to a soda machine.

He is useless, like an empty pocket.

He is useless, like a bent penny lying in the gutter.

He is useless, like an expired credit card.

He is useless, like a balloon without air.

I know these aren't great, but you might try to stick with money similes, since you talk about the "amount" of knowledge and "wealth" of information.

I think the point is that he potentially has the resources, but he doesn't know what to do with them. So...

"...like a monkey with a credit card"

id rewrite the sentence to read

"but if he has no idea how to use that wealth of information, that knowledge is worthless"

calling a graduate useless...now thats crude ;)

Maybe you guys shouldn't answer if you can't tell the difference between a synonym and simile

Simile-Comparison of two unlike objects connected by the word "like" or "as"

ex: The tire hissed like a snake when i pulled the nail out

Also you could use a metaphor such as

"the flaccid penis of an educational system we in the US have"

Wow! A lot of these people totally don't get your question!

Problem is that I can't think of anything good, but I'll suggest you look for something that relates to education or school, like

useless as a pen without ink

useless as a library with no books

(these are terrible, but maybe if you narrow it down like that someone will come up with something.)

below are a few examples of similies you can use.

Yes, the amount of knowledge a graduate has is important, but if he has no idea how to use that wealth of information, he is useless, like a crutch to a paraplegic.

that's all i have for now. hope this helps.
