Sophisticated comes from the Greek - as in, the sophists, a group of people in the Athenian democracy.
The sophists were a group formed mainly of men from outside Athens who came to join with Pericles.
In spite of what followed, the people of Athens greatly admired Pericles and kept voting him into power
for a period of about thirty years.

The Sophists of Athens formed what we might think of today as the original 'atheists' - at least, they seemed not to have any belief in the Gods.
I'm not sure that the modern word 'sophisticated' is directly related to the 'sophists' but it is nice to think that it might be, even in some tenuous way.
Anyway, I'm sticking to my theory on that.
Athena with you always
