totally tubular - very, very good or cool

val-speak - popularized in the 80s, it's a form of slang contributed to folks found in "the Valley" of California, especially Valley Girls. Val-speak became more widely known after Moon Unit Zappa's song, "Valley Girl". The most used ones I can think of were "gag me with a spoon", "totally", and using the word 'like' at the start of practically every sentence.

tail (also known as rat tail) - a length of hair kept longer than the rest of the back of the hair. Often combined with spiked hair or the ever-popular mullet hairstyle. Worn by either gender, though it seemed to be preferred by males.

A word I thought was cool that you never hear anymore is "monstro." Monstro means something that's huge in size, but also something that's extremely cool.

Also, the terms "eat a hodgy" and its coarser cousin "suck a hodgy" were once said between kids. It's along the same lines as stick it!/up yours!/bite me!, etc.

I remember actually using Valley Talk as a kid. Watch "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" for a real primer on early '80s-speak. Plus it's a cool movie.

Junior officers are sometimes called "Snotties" in the British and Canadian navies (not certain if this applies in the US navy) The history behind the term is that during the era of masted sailing ships, junior officers (lieutenants) were often the sons of aristocracy or other wealthy citizens who would send their boys to serve in relative safety. Since they were often quite young (young teens) and from priveleged backgrounds they were often fragile and weepy crybabies. That is why there are big brass buttons on the sleeves of Navy dress uniforms. They were placed there to keep the young men from from wiping their noses on their uniforms! Thus the expression "Snotties"

Bear or Smokey

Thought you might be interested to know that my dad, Al Corban, who is 87 years old and was a long-time trucker and driver says he originated the term "smokey" and by the same action originated the term "bear". In Montana, where he was operating for most of his life, there was a hauling job in which timber was being taken out of a National Forest area. Because of that the Forest Service had people checking the trucks to see that they were meeting all the standards. In fact, they could issue tickets and fines. The truckers would call each other when one was spotted somewhere and warn others about their presence. Since they wore the standard uniform with the "Smokey the Bear" hats, Dad started talking about them on his radio as "Smokey Bears" or, as it was quickly shortened to, "Smokies",a "smokey" or "Bear(s)". As time went on the term naturally got picked up and applied to any mobile law officer or any officer in general.
