Hi Layka,

In day gone by many publicans spread sawdust on the Bar floor and signs directed the patrons to spit on the floor.

Why?

Because the sawdust absorbed the spittle and also spilled beer making it easier to keep the floor clean. Drinkers, mostly male weren't too fussy about personal hygiene and would spit directly on the floor. Having sawdust spread over the floor area tended to hide all the spittle along with beer spillages.

Hope that helps.

spit-and-sawdust (British)

a spit-and-sawdust pub (= type of bar that is found in Britain) is dirty and untidy and is not modern or attractive (always before noun) There are one or two spit-and-sawdust pubs in the town centre but nothing remotely trendy.

I agree with your ideas and sentiments... especially about Prog Rock. Rock has turned into an emourmous genre, too big to even begin to break down into what is and what isn't "rockin".... There are so many eschalons of Rock, from early day stuff from Elvis to latter day stuff from the "acid rock" era, to punk, to alternative, to Metal, to grunge, to Prog, to neo- geek rock (ala Daft Punk). I choose to look at Rock and Roll like one would at a family of animal... say the Canine. There are Hundreds or Thousands of Dog breeds, each does something a little different, is a different size, different sounding, different uses... etc. Rock music is like this... different types of Rock and Roll are like the different dog breeds, ( Soft Rock would be a chihuahua, Death Metal might be a Pit Bull for eg) but they all fall under the "Rock and Roll" family, just like the dogs fall under the "Canine" family. When I think of Rock, as a 25yo raised with 60s-70s era parents, I immediately think Led Zep, Stones, and Doors. The Classic Rock era. Then I think Punk- Sex Pistols, Clash and Green Day. Then I think Prog- My favorite band ever comes to mind, Rush. then Tool, Metallica, etc. that's just me tho.
