The second sentence that you offered is better than the first.







I think you are trying to say that a rule is not made invalid

merely because there is an exception to that rule.



I would write it this way: "Exceptions do not invalidate the general rule."

I prefer "Exceptions do not invalidate the generalisations."

i prefer the second since "generalizations" is a noun, so as "exceptions";



but if you'd use "general", i think it's awkward because it is and adjective.
