just wondered if there is anything to the fact that hell and hello are only a letter apart? hello is a common greeting.. even germans say hallo, slovaks say halo, etc. is there any kind of connection, like did HELLO as a greeting stem from some ancient story about HELL, the place?

No, they are not related. Languages often borrow from each other. I suspect "hello" may be so popular due to the influence of the telephone, invented in an English speaking country.

The etymology of the words (from Merriam-Webster) is below:

HELL

Etymology:

Middle English, from Old English; akin to Old English helan to conceal, Old High German helan, Latin celare, Greek kalyptein

Date:

before 12th century

HELLO

Etymology:

alteration of hollo

Date:

1877

HOLLO

Etymology:

origin unknown

Date:

1588

1 —used to attract attention (as when a fox is spied during a fox hunt) 2 —used as a call of encouragement or jubilation

The only connection I would be worried about is if it was Satan saying HELLo to you!! Other than that, I don't think they have anything to do with each other!!
