I've heard this word used so often but I'm not sure what it means. Is it a bad thing to be considered a redneck? What does it mean?

It's supposed to be a person that is from the country. They are called a "redneck" because they work on a farm, and their necks get red from the sun on the back of their necks. They are considered not very intelligent, so it's used as an insult. It doesn't have to be someone from the south either, it refers to anyone from the country.

Slaves used to cost the equivalent of $250,000 dollars each. Southerners who could afford them were wealthy. Southerners who were poor and couldn't afford slaves used to wear hats while picking cotton, but in bending over all day, the sun would make the back of their necks red. Over time this became associated with poor white trash. Fast forward to today: Many southerners don't mind calling each other rednecks, but if others use the term, it's considered an insult. The term is now recognized all over the English speaking world and usually means a backward, prejudiced person with little education and an unchanging mind, and can be from any English speaking country.

A redneck is an insult. It pretty much means Southern white trash. Some are proud to consider themselves rednecks. Exp: The Cable Guy-comedian

Now it's an (sometimes, depending on who says it) insulting word used to describe someone of a poor white southern background. It can be used kind of like how black people say the n-word, like you can only say it without offending someone if you're a redneck too.
It used to have a more honorable connotation though, because rednecks were the ones who farmed their own land, instead of using slaves. They got their name because they always had sunburns on their necks from working in the fields.

back in the 60's it refered to working men who werent hippies. Their necks were red because their hair was short and they worked out in the sun. Like loggers and farmers and ranchers.
Not long haired hippies, whom they hated.
