Shingle, singular, refers to a roof. Shingles, plural, describe a very painful skin condition. When I started to learn the English language, I had major problems with words that sound the same

and are spelled the same, but have totally different meanings.

It has become easier now, but I will never stop to learn this amazing language.

Besides shingle meaning a flap or tile of roofing material, another related meaning is that of shingle as in " he hung out his shingle". This would mean someone went into business and refers to the swinging sign above the door of a business or office. And of course there is the painful condition of shingles which can happen late in life as an after-effect of chicken pox.
