Is a memory cache in a computer pronounced "cash-ay" or "cash?" Dictionary uses (kāsh) as the guide. I take this to sound like "cash." Which is it?
I've heard computer guys say it's cash not cash-ay.
Last night I was watching C-Span and a 4*general was talking about weapon caches in Iraq. He prounced it "cash-AY" that bothered me because in the dictionary weapon caches are still said to be pronounced (kāsh). Weapons "Cash." Please advise. Did the 4* general mispronounce a thing like that? Thanks.

cash (from French "Cache" meaning a hiding place)

Cachet (also from French meaning seal or stamp) is pronounced cashay

I've always heard the word pronounced 'cash' (as in folding money cash) ... my dictionary has it as cash with the short sound symbol over it. The general mispronounced the word. He's a general, not an English teacher, and my dictionary is old (1957, but it's a good dictionary in two volumes) so the 'approved' pronunciation may have changed ... but generally, people all over the US and in England, Canada, and Australia say 'cash' not 'cash-AY' ... so I'd say it the same way you always have.

Cache is pronounced "cash"-sounds like the 4 star general mispronounced the word.

I say "cash", but it comes from the French word cacher (pronounced cash-ay) meaning to hide. Maybe that's why peple add the "ay" at the end.
