Why do people call a dessert spoon a tablespoon?

I have this argument with friends every time we do cooking. Basically, they all call dessert spoons tablespoons, and even have measuring spoons witch say a dessert spoon is the larger. Various people in my family have worked in catering, we have spoons which even say tablespoon on them and I have checked on the internet. So why does even the Home Ec teacher call them tablespoons? Where did this come from?
Thank you, it's really bugging me.

A tablespoon is three teaspoons. A dessert spoon is two tablespoons.

Most people wouldn't know the difference because they don't use dessert spoons. So they see a dessert spoon and they say 'That's a tablespoon' because it's bigger than a teaspoon.

I've always thought that a tablespoon is bigger than a dessert spoon and can be used at the table to serve food from the container in which it was cooked.

A dessert spoon (the smaller one, but bigger than a teaspoon) is the one used to eat a dessert.

A dessert spoon is what we Brits use when we eat our pudding. A tablespoon is what I use in cooking, and also as a serving spoon. It is bigger than a dessert spoon.

I think they are different spoons.

A table spoon is bigger than a dessert spoon. A table spoon is used to serve food and a dessert spoon is used to eat dessert.

people call a dessert spoon a table spoon because it was oringanally made of wood and a table spoon is sopposed to be small and usefull like a dessert spoon so they just call the same thing a diffrent way.

I've never heard of a dessert spoon before this. There are only teaspoons and tablespoons, except in measuring spoons, which have fractions of the two.

MY guess is that it was the serving spoon left on the TABLE,for each dish to allow individuals to help themselves.A tea spoon was originally used for measuring cream and sugar for High society teas.Started about the 1700's at 4PM for a female Blueblood who was hungry and didn't want to wait for dinner to be cooked in England.A tablespoon is too large to fit in the cup.

In the US, we call them table spoons.

I prefer that term since I do not eat desserts. All they do is make you fat.
