Have you ever heard someone say they are filled to the brim. I know what a rim is but what on earth is a brim.

Definitions of brim on the Web:
be completely full; "His eyes brimmed with tears"
the top edge of a vessel or other container
fill as much as possible; "brim a cup to good fellowship"

In this case, a brim is the top edge of a cup or mug.
Something "filled to the brim" is as full as possible.

A hat has a brim, the bit that sticks out. If you turn it over and fill it with water, it will reach the brim then spill over, so you were full and couldnt hold any more.
