Bill said, I heard you are lazy..." (ellipsis (...) used her to indicate 'more coming').

"But," Sam began, "I'm better now."

"...and stupid too," Bill continued." (ellipsis shows continuance).

"Takes one to know one," grinned Sam.



Beginning a chapter with 'but (But)' shows poor structure, however, You and I can create situations where it would be acceptable.

But that's another story. (see the 'But' here?)

Generally yes, (but) it's common to folks. But editors tend to avoid this mistake.
