Basically I want to reference these sentences but there's quite a lot of irrelevant information. How would I go about using the information that I need? Would I put them in to separate quotations? The sentence is as follows.....

'The longitudinal direction, also referred to as the direction parallel to the grain, is parallel to the cylindrical axis of the tree trunk and also to the long axis of the majority of the constituent cells. This direction has the highest proportion of primary bonds resisting applied loads and therefore the direction of greatest strength.’

"The longitudinal direction... is parallel to the cylindrical axis of the tree trunk and also to the long axis of the majority of the constituent cells." "[The longitudinal] direction has the highest proportion of primary bonds resisting applied loads and therefore the direction of greatest strength."

Adjusted, of course, to get the information that you need out of it.

You could paraphrase, or perhaps cut the chunks you don't want out and replace them with a connecting word in brackets. eg "The longitudinal direction (is) parallel to the cylindrical axis".
