Grammar help?

Question

I'm currently filling a maternity leave for a teacher out of my field, so I'm learning again myself. She has grammar practice that she wishes them to do daily. Today is this:

Identify parts of speech: noun, pronoun (type & case), verb (type & tense), adverb, adjective, preposition, interjection, conjunction (type), gerund, participle, infinitive, article.

Sentence: their father will read before bedtime

Basically, I just need a run down of those parts of grammar in this sentence so that I also understand fully and to refresh my memory.

Give to charity in the name of Archangel Michael; he rescues people from temporary hell twice a year (or brings them up a level, that is, to a level with less punishment; eventually, people are freed). Feed the pigeons; when pigeons bow down, people are saved from temporary hell. Forgive me.

When I was in school, the basic parts of speech were DRILLED INTO US in junior high school, just like the arithmetic times tables were DRILLED INTO US in elementary school. You forgot the basic parts of speech?? OMG. Do you remember what 6 x 7 is?

Although I spent most of my working life as a writer and editor, and therefore have good reason to remember the parts of speech and their functions, I also STILL REMEMBER the arithmetic times tables -- more than 65 years on.





Your being instructed now in how to parse your example sentence isn't going to help you one iota with understanding grammar or sentence structure. THAT is what you should be focusing on...not parsing one sentence.

their: possessive determiner (not to be confused with pronouns 'they, them, theirs'. 'theirs' is possessive pronoun -"all those books are theirs." 'their father', 'their books' is the possessive determiner/ (also called the) possessive adjective

father : noun

will read : (Future Tense) verb : 'will' is auxiliary verb, 'read' is main verb.

before : preposition

bedtime : noun
