Why is African American The Politically Correct Terminology?

Why do white people exercise the term “African American”, and believe it to be a more politically correct terminology to use over the word “black”, yet they refer to others of the same race or identify themselves as simply “white” verses an equivalent terminology such as “European American”?
Not all black people are African, nor are all black people American for that matter.

I think the 'white' folks should be called 'European-Americans' too, since the land originally belong to the indians
