Haylee, judging from your icon I guess you are quite young. I'm not! In days past (pre sponge-mop era), mops were only made with long, absorbent strands of fabric or twisted strands of twine. It looked a lot like a thick strands of human hair-- like dreadlocks!



Mop-heads were frequently used as wigs for comedy sketches and costume parties. A new mop actually looks like a nice head of hair, but after some use on floors they become scraggly and matted.

it means you got defeated completely literally, it could mean you got beaten to a pulp, so watery that it was possible for someone to mop the floor with your remains. heh heh sorry for the grotesque mental image :)
