For the most part, they can mean the same thing. They are synonyms for each other. USUALLY, directions mean telling you how to get somewhere, but that is not its ONLY definition.

For example, this is one of the definitions of directions, in the dictionary referenced below:

6. Usually, directions. instruction or guidance for making, using, etc.: directions for baking a cake.

Directions are usually something to guide you somewhere, whereas instructions can be a guide for just about anything. Looking at it this way, they could be directions to guide you to the end of putting the thing together, or instructions on how to do it. In this case, I'd say there is no significant difference.

The terms are often used interchangeably. However, each has a distinct sense:

"Directions" connotate a series of steps allowing the reader to mindlessly replicate a desired result. That is, "Insert Tab A into Slot A," where the reader has no idea of the function the tabs and slots are supposed to perform.

"Instructions" connotate some educational value, whereby the reader, by following an indicated series of steps, learns something about how the process works. For instance, "Now, add 1 mg of cadmium to the mixture, causing the chelates in the solution to precipitate to the bottom."

not much in real termswhen you talk about consumer products although the word " instruct" suggests some teaching and explanation involved.

some directions dont tell you how to do certain tasks -- only to do them in a certain order, so that if you don't posses the basic skills, a given set of directions may be useless to you.

but a properly worded set of instructions might be more helpful.
