A pet peeve (or pet hate) is a minor annoyance that can instill extreme frustration in an individual. Typically each person has several pet peeves that aggravate him more than the average person. Another person may not react as negatively or at all to the same circumstance.

The term originated from the word 'peeve.' A 'peeve,' meaning something that is particularly irritating or annoying, is a relatively recent word. Its first printed usage was in 1911. The term is a back formation from a 14th-century word: 'peevish,' meaning ornery or ill-tempered.

The phrase 'pet peeve,' a uniquely personal irritant, first appeared in print in the early 20th century.

Pet peeves are typically of common occurrences and a person may encounter their pet peeve very often. Pet peeves involve complaints about specific behaviors, rather than general complaining. Pet peeves often involve specific behaviors of someone close such as a spouse or significant other. These behaviors may include those of disrespect, those involving manners, personal hygiene, relationships, and family issues. An example of a pet peeve involving disrespect is someone not using their turn signal while driving; while some drivers feel frustrated when another driver does not use their turn signal, other drivers do not care very much, or consider something else, such as cellphone usage while driving more annoying. Many pet peeves associated with driving can result in road rage, where the person who feels peeved seeks some sort of retribution for the action. Road Rage itself is considered a pet peeve by many.

Often a pet peeve will seem illogical to others. For example a supervisor may have a pet peeve about people leaving the lid on the copier up and react angrily, be annoyed when others interrupt when speaking, or by messy desks of their subordinates. That same supervisor may witness employees coming into work late, and not feel any annoyance whatsoever.

Pet peeve are little things that drive you absolutely crazy. If your doing a research paper you might want to ask what is your pet peeve and why? This will enlarge what you have to work with on the research paper.

A pet peeve is something that bothers a person that would otherwise not bother another person.

ie: the sound of a knuckles cracking can bother certain people but not others. To those bothered, that would be a pet peeve.

A pet peeve is usually something small that irritates the heck out of you. A couple of mine are being late and another one is being kept waiting.

A pet peeve is basically everything that the people above said...something that people do that really irks or irritates you, but usually doesn't bother others too much. A couple of mine are the wrong use of your/you're, their/there, and chatspeak. When I read something with "lyk, hai! im so glad your here!" just makes me want to smack them upside the head. lol

Things that annoy you, or 'peeve' you. eg One of my pet peeves is people who drive and talk on their mobile phones at the same time. It really p*sses me off, because it's dangerous.

My pet peeve is people chewing with their mouths open. I can't stand to eat a meal with someone that is unable to chew with their mouth shut.

Your "puppy peeve" will be something that continually ticks you off, as although you want to get mad about that one certain element because it occurs so commonly. form of like the nature on your widespread television educate it truly is "your loved to hate."

An act or habit that is the one thing that bothers, irriates or angers an individual more than anything else. It is the main thing that a person can not abide, tolerate and is guaranteed to either anger or stimulate distain.

Somthing that personally annoys you.

For me it is people parking in no parking zones and just leaving their caution lights on.
