when someone says "something smells funny" of say "this pencil smells funny" does that mean that it stinks and does it also mean the same thing as "smells funky"

connotations my dear boy. "funny" is lighter, less offensive than "funky". someone says "u smell funny" it could be a bad choice in cologne. "u smell funky" means u stink & should shower ASAP.
