Dear yahoo people ; can I ask your help for some time I have been studying the urdu script and am up to about lesson nine , wheare I purchased an arabic newspaper to check my ability to read and to my supprise i wasn't able to diseminate more than three letters . In my book the letters are fairly easy to read , and they tend to slant right to left downward initial medial final all connected , wheare as in the arabic newspaper the letters were in a streight line and I wasn't able to disseminate the letters . Like in english writing there is printing each letter is seperate and writing is initial medial final all connected. My question is are the letters in the arabic newspaper a written form of arabic script that is not being shown in my book . my book is written in third grade young child form . Thankyou very much for any help with this gurkirpal singh

Arabc has lesser alphabets than Urdu. Like an answerer said.

SO if you know Urdu you can read Arabic (though not understand it) but it does not apply vice versa.

There are different styles of writing - fonts. Urdu is most popularly written in teh traditional Persian style which is called Khat-e-Faarsi. Arabic is written popularly in its own calligraphic style (I dont recall the name right nw).

Rest is the same- same tashdeed, zaer and zabar.

"It is a modification of the Persian alphabet, which is itself a derivative of the Arabic alphabet." wikipedia

I am an arab and i can't read Urdu because it has some Hindi letters i think. Arabic and Urdu do have some letters in common (as a result of the statement above) but they are two totally different languages. An Arab would probably not even understand Persian (which is supposedly closer to Urdu)

also Arabic letters are connected in words so their shapes change when they are in context, I don't know if that applies to Urdu as well.

EDIT - Arabic doesn't have the letters

پ pe

ٹ ṭe

چ ce

ڈ ḍāl

ڑ aṛ

ژ zhe

گ gāf

ہ, ﮩ, ﮨ choṭī he

ے bari ye

hope this is helpful ... good luck with your Urdu lessons.

urdu and arabic is very different... im guessing you are a hindi speaker so youll find the words familiar but the script would be totally alien to you...

urdu is a mixture of arabic, persian, english and sanskrit that is the reason it is called "lashkari zaban" to read an arabic newspaper you should know arabic try reading som urdu newspapers that would be a better test of your abilities... http://www.express.com.pk/ try reading this...

urdu and arabic have same letters and even writing is similar yet they are very different... an urdu speaker can read a litle bit arabic because of having read the Quran and also because some english movie channels run arabic translations below so you can put the dialogues and words together and figure something out... good luck learning! =]
