same as ***-kissing, sucking-up to someone. if you kiss someone's *** too much your nose would get poo-poo on it- hence the brown nose.

It could mean laughing at someone's jokes even if they aren't funny so that the someone will look positively on you. People accuse each other of brown nosing when they think all is not as it seems. Deception may be occuring or that's what is felt on the part of the accuser. It is usually harmless or is it?

"brown nosing" is the term for someone who does what it takes to gain favor from a boss or a teacher. We also call this "*** kissing".
