Although I've heard some people saying hobnocker, it should actually be hobnobber. Hobnobbers are those who hobnob.
The word hobnob is a combination of two old english words "habben" (have) and "nabben" (not have) so it means someone who does not have money, fame, qualifications, status etc socialising/hanging out with those who do have.

A hob on a stove used to be made of cast iron ... some still are. Cast iron is brittle and can develop fine cracks. A cracked stove is dangerous, as under heat, it can shatter violently. So families used to keep a small metal hammer by the hob, and every day someone would gently tap the hob with the hammer. If it gave a clear ringing note, then it was fine, but if a crack had started, the note would be dull, and they would know the hob was no longer safe. The hammer was called a hobknocker.
A similar word occurs in the railway industry, where locomotive wheels were similarly checked to ensure that fine cracks had not developed. Specialised 'wheeltappers' were employed to tap the wheels with a hammer and listen to the note.
