Break up the word "everybody," and think of it as "every body is"; "body" is a singular noun.
You could say the same thing in a slightly different way: "All bodies are"; "bodies" is a plural noun.

Everybody is. Everybody being a collective term, like "the public". You would say, "The public is interested in the ongoing debate on health care reform", not "the public are interested". Get it?

Everybody - points to individuals. It means Every"one" in a lot. Its singular. So "Eveybody is" is correct.

Everybody is - it's actually singular, although it sounds plural. take it apart - every body. that means one, so you use the singular verb with it, Everybody is.
